Dispalyport will run at a higher refresh rate than HDMI. At least from my PC. When connected to my iMac I haven't found any differences.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. When it comes to 4K displays, it depends on the display and your Mac Pro. Here is the support article from Apple: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206587 I have a Md-2014 MBP 15" and to get 4K at 60hz,I needed to go to the Mini-Display Port(works with Thunderbolt Port) to Display Port 1.2 standard. The Display Port 1.2 standard is important. I tried this with a non-compliant Mini DP to DP and had issues.

Please try again later. If the "Data Port" that you are referring to on the LG 27" Class 4K UHD IPS LED Monitor (27" Diagonal), Model # 27UD69P-W is the Display Port, both HDMI and DisplayPort can send high-definition digital video and audio from a source device to a display. Both will deliver enough bandwidth to carry video resolutions of up to 3840 by 2160 pixels at a refresh rate of 60Hz, and it supports all common 3D video formats. DisplayPort cables can also carry multi channel digital audio. Display Port 1.2 also supports all common 3D video formats and with the addition of a simple adapter, a DisplayPort cable can connect a DisplayPort source to a VGA display (which is very useful when you need to connect your laptop to an older video projector). Adapters are also available to connect a DisplayPort source to a single-link DVI or HDMI display. HDMI cables can be connected to a DVI interface, but that’s it...^IFV
