No. The only time you ever have to add freon is because you have a leak. We got stuck with numerous charges by a very dishonest a/c company until I realized that it never stopped freezing up and they just kept charging for freon knowing we had a leak. Our central heat and air wasnt even a year old. When I demanded a freon leak tester brought out they refused, stating our neighbors were stealing the freon! Reported the company immediately for fraudulent charges etc. If you discover your portable is freezing up you must allow to thaw without use of hairdryer or any other means. Then report.

You will only need more refrigerant if there is a leak in your cooling system. If there is a leak in your system, you would know because if would affect performance, at which point it would need to be addressed. ^Chris
