Technically, there is no difference between 720p and 1080i. 720p is 1280 pixels horizontally by 720 pixels vertically and while 1080i is 1920 pixels horizontally by 1080 pixels vertically and the total number of pixels is 2,073, however, it is interlaced (i.e. the "i" after 1080) so the lines are painted on the screen in two passes (i.e alternate fields) of 540 lines each while 720p is progressive (i.e. the "p" after 720) so the lines are painted on the screen in one pass(i.e sequentially) of 720 lines. Progressive scanning reduces the need to prevent flicker by filtering out fine details, so spatial (sharpness) resolution is much closer to 1080i than the number of scan lines would suggest...^IFV
