“How much clearance does the unit need in the back If all the connections including the vent are recessed in the back wall? I have very limited depth space. Can it be pushed against the wall or would an inch of space be ok?”

Washer and 7.4 cu. ft. Electric Dryer, Model # WKE100HVA you need to allow minimum clearances of at least 1'' (2.5 cm) at the sides and 4'' (10 cm) behind the appliance.
