If one of the components breaks down beyond repair, the whole unit would have to be replaced--which is similar to stacked sets. Will stacked, if, say, the washer breaks down beyond repair after a few years, you probably couldn't find the exact same washer to replace it, so you would need to replace both units. Stacking units not specifically designed to be stacked together could be dangerous and would probably void the warranty.
