We have our countertop installed about two inches over the unit. However, as long as you have any space around the washer/dryer, I don't see why you would need more space. It's not generating heat like a microwave or refrigerator. I'm assuming you would have a vented dryer going to the outside. Keep in mind though that you should have some way to access the hot and cold shut offs in case of emergency!
