“Is the control panel supposed to be back-lit, or are at least the words on there supposed to glow?? The words that are printed on the display (for example, high, low medium, cool, warm and hot, etc) are almost impossible to read, even in normal light.”

Please try again later.When you choose the setting , the round button, it is preset to certain temp but if you want to change that you touch the temp button, then touch the temp you want. Or the spin , you can change that as well, or the soil. Whatever you choose or whatever is preselected will be lit along with the time.. whatever is not selected will not be lit. Maybe you need a light above your washer. Some people have theirs in the basement and that would be difficult to see.
