“I want cold water for my dark clothes, but the machine won't do cold water on the normal setting. Is there a "normal" sort of setting that I can do with cold water? The manual that came with my machine manual doesn't even explain the different cycles.”

You need to download the full manual from the LG website. It details the wash cycles and what temperatures are available for each. Also type of items recommended for cycles
