As far as laying down in bed and watching TV, you should have no problems. I sometimes lay down on my futon couch and watch stuff on this TV and have no problems watching whatever I'm watching. I would say my futon couch is about ten to twelve inches lower than the TV. The viewing angles of the TV from the sides is around 160 to 170 degrees, I think. It looked fine from the sides as well.
