I automatically connect my equipment to the internet as I cut the cord years ago. I do not believe it's a requirement but it will not get any firmware or software updates for the TV itself and obviously any apps. You can simply connect to the cable, satellite dish or indoor or outdoor digital antennae for a video source as it does not have a built in antennae to my knowledge. Just choose the correct input source at setup and ignore the other bells and whistles and it should be fine. I spent the extra due to using the internet to stream video/TV for a better picture as the main TV in the house. I would however go cheaper if the picture is not your main priority or if used elsewhere and is not the main source of enjoyment in the house. Personal choice.
