An HDMI ARC stands for Audio Return channel. The difference occurs on the receiver side. HDMI ARC can also send audio in reverse, from a TV into an external speaker or Soundbar, without having to attach a separate audio cable. ^Daphane

It uses up a port so you can use something like an Apple TV, Console, Roku, etc and play sound out of the sound system without having to use something like an optical cable or bluetooth. This also allows you not to have to pass devices through the soundbar to get the 5.1 or Dolby Atmos. Basically I always have to factor in a port for my sound system. They can be used normally. That is typically the only port that supports ARC however.
