There is a option in the display settings to auto adjust the screen format for the format of the programming. If it's already set on that setting then you are either watching a program that's not supporting 16x9 (wide screen) format or you are not watching the HD channel that would give you the correct format. The black or grey bars on either side of the screen represent the 4x3 format
