The short answer is yes, you will need an internet subscription. The wifi works just like your roku player or apple tv. You will connect the tv to your wifi network and then you can watch the apps like Youtube, Hulu and Nextfilx. You do not need this to watch standard tv however.

If you want to make use of NETFLIX, Amazon Prime Video or other pay sites, you would need to buy those services AND have internet service/WiFi. If you just want to watch YouTube videos and other free internet content, all you would need is the WiFi connection to your current internet service. There are no additional plans necessary for those free sites.
