To get a true 4K picture, you absolutely need to get a 4K UHD Blu-ray player and play the new 4K UHD Blu-ray discs on the 4K player. If you play regular Blu-ray discs, on a new 4K UHD player, the machine will try to upscale the signal as best as possible, but it will still not be a true 4K picture. You also need to get new HDMI2 cables to use in a new 4K UHD Blu-ray player, as the old, original HDMI cables are not capable of carrying a 4K signal to the TV. You do not need to buy very expensive HDMI2 cables. As long as it says "HDMI2" or "rated for 4K devices, " that cable will work. If you shop around, you can find perfectly acceptable 4K rated HDMI2 cables in the $10-15 range, for a 6 foot cable.
