“Since the downdraft fan goes on every time the unit is on, how loud is it? For instance, if this unit is built into an island, it is annoying to those sitting nearby? Thanks.”

While you can hear the fan, it is not loud. There is no need to raise your voice to talk over it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Personally, I would not deem the fan volume as "annoying" though it is audible. In my household, it does not disrupt conversation unlike some overhead exhaust fans on high.
