• The fan isn't really a downdraft exhaust fan. The fan is for the convection feature. Yes, you still need an exhaust hood.

• We just happen to have one, but it has not been necessary and have had no issues with either smoke or odors. It's one of the things I love about this oven.

• I'd advise yes, because during most cooking on the top creates a lot of grease and smells. We installed a Samsung "thin" microwave (model ME11A7510DS/AA) over the stove to vent those odors. It is also sold by Best Buy.
