• What they mean is that if you measure the width with the door closed, you get the refrigerator's width, but if you open the door, you get the width needed to open the door and to access the refrigerator. The difference is only important if you plan to put the refrigerator in a "nook," meaning you would have to leave enough space for the door to open.
