• A "smart" remote can "learn" the signals from other remote controls. If it's not a smart remote it can only be used for devices that are already pre-programmed into it. If you have an older (or a very new or obscure brand) of DVD player or TV, you are less likely to be able to control it with a remote that can't "learn" from the device's original remote.
