great question! it's not about the volume of the clothing, but about the purpose of each appliance-- The washer and water can soak clothing in a more compact format. For a dryer to work effectively the clothes need to tumble freely and have more surface area exposed to the air.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.In my experience, a comforter that is wet takes up a lot less room than a dry one. You can put a comforter in the washer and as it washes, it compacts down. In the dryer, it fluffs up to maybe 3 times the cubic size, so the dryer needs to be larger.
