It does flake off with wear. Look at black clothes and see tiny specks of glitter. Thats the aluminum alloy coming off the dryer drum. Mine did this after just 3 years.

The finish on an aluminized alloy drum dryer is described as durable. One motivation for manufactures is that this is a less costly way to manufacture a dryer drum. I can answer this by stating I have not heard of tiny pieces (dust) of aluminum going into clothes or into the atmosphere.
