Building codes before 1996 allowed for 3-wire connections with these types of appliances. After that, 4-wire hook-ups were required on newly built houses. The difference is just another wire for better grounding. So, neither LG nor any distributor can know when any given house was built, which is why it's up to the consumer (you) to determine & purchase the cord you need.
