“How deep is the nutsert on the bottom and side of the speakers? I ordered a pair of stands and understand I need to provide my own 4mm bolts to fasten the speakers to the mounting plate. How long or short should the 4mm bolt be to ensure a good fit?”

You can always "shorten" the bolt on the stand with a rubber or nylon washer. Take a speaker and a stand into home depot and find what you need to make it work. Slip on the washer/spacer, then attach the speaker. I do this with a video camera and audio recorder mounted to a special tripod.
