You don't have to hold the button down to operate. The power button is an on/off switch. There are also +/- buttons to control the power level (e.g., normal, high and turbo). You just press these to cycle through the settings, they don't have to be held down (with the exception of holding the + button for 3 seconds to put in turbo mode).
