“Is there any indicator on the display that shows if is picking up Dolby Digital or DTS or PCM. I can't see anything that indicates this and I find it a little annoying.”

Just so you know optical output from an LG TV does not output Dolby 5.1! Only stereo. I find this kind of poor design since most of us buying these TVs and soundbars want this feature! The only way to get 5.1 is through HDMI passthrough with a receiver!
