The BP175 can connect to your router via an ethernet cable. It does not require another streaming device be connected to the TV unless you are wanting applications not on the BP175 that those streaming devices offer. ^CP
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.My TV is Smart, but I didn't use that capability. Instead I streamed Netflix from this player through the HDMI port. It should work fine with any HDMI supporting TV, smart or not. Streaming was a little slow, though. Also, apps are limited. However, it is an inexpensive player, so you shouldn't expect more. I have my player hard wired to the router via Ethernet, and it works great!
