As far as for the microphone it is noise cancelling but it is difficult to hear sometimes with phone calls because the microphone is so far away from your mouth. But since the earbuds stick into your ears it muffles The Sound around you so you can hear much better with phone calls.

Meaning the ear bud tips seal in your ear and physically block the bling edges of outside noise before it gets to your ear. I use them as earplugs when I'm working on my table saw or using the chainsaw outside. Works well to make the lawn tractor noise mellow too.
