• No hub is required at all. All you need is the app on a device (cellphone, ipad whichever you choose) and that is all. If you want to control it with your voice rather than the app, you will need google home, or an alexa enabled device. But it works just fine as a standalone item too.

• You need your phone and wifi. You can set up your bulb on the Lifx app to come on at any time, and at any color you like. You can set it up for sunrise or sunset as well. Up to you. There are also multiple special effects you can apply to your bulb, such as pastels that will change from one pastel color to another at the rate you set it.
