First I would make sure that it is plugged into your fastest USB port hopefully a USB 3.0 port but 2.0 will suffice. If that is already happening try and reset (unplug) your modem and router and that sometimes will fix it as well. This device is a bit finicky but I regularly get 50+ Mbps speeds after resetting my modem; though the speeds drop down to about 1mbps after a few weeks just unplug it and plug it back in and it should work again.
