• Hi, unklchuk. You still need an active WiFi connection in order to use the adapter. It is only designed to add or upgrade the wireless connectivity if the laptop is still not utilizing an AC standard or if it doesn’t have a built in wireless adapter.

• This probably isnt quite what you are looking for. Most laptops will have a wifi card built in. This item is for devices that dont have a wifi card already such as a homebuild pc or certain kinds of security systems.
