Yes you can do that. You can have it connect directly to the extender or if it's still in range of the main router you can connect it to that by Wi-Fi

If you do connect the second wifi extender to the first extender, you may/will encounter IP numbers that conflict with the main router.

My main router is centrally located in the house but the house is very spread out so it needed more coverage. They seem to work just fine but if I was starting from scratch (already owned the router and one extender), I would have looked at a mesh system.
