Yes, I had the reverse problem (router and strong WiFi signal downstairs, but limited WiFi upstairs). This unit will plug into the wall and you will then set up the extender via phone or computer using the internet. Once set up, your downstairs WiFi signal will work best when you log into the extender (it will have its own login, which you can make the same as your existing WiFi, or personalize however you like). The extender also comes with an Ethernet cord which you can (totally optional) plug directly into the extended and your downstairs computer if convenient.
