That always depends on building material and any interference from other equipment. Our extender is in our lower level and can be used in our yard. I do not know about specific brands but our Linksys extender works fantastic.

I have mine being used to extend the signal into a basement and it's about 750 Sq ft, and I get a full signal in the entire space. So as long as you can get a signal on the second floor, I would recommend putting it somewhere where you can get a pretty weak signal off of the original to maximize the range. Hope that helps!
