Well you would need internet which normally comes through a modem then you connect the modem to the router to get wireless internet. But if its like my place, the modem is in a central location for the apartment complex so I just have a Ethernet port in my wall and I plug a ethernet cord into the wall connecting it to the ac1200 router and it works great. Yes you need some time of source for the internet to be sent to the router. Hope that answers your question.
