“Hi if I have internet through my local phone provider they told me to get a netgear or linskys router or I can rent 1 from them so would this one be good for streaming movies and is it password protected?”

Please don't waste your money renting, just buy the router and purchase extension warranty on it from Best Buy. Never regret!!

If you are connecting wirelessly to your streaming device, I would recommend getting a router that has AC 3000 or better in its model description. All routers (wireless or non wireless) have password protection. Your router is your firewall between the outside world (WAN) and your home network (LAN). You can log in to your router by connecting your laptop directly to one of the routers ports and typing in this address in your browsers search bar... 192.168.1.1 You have to enter a password to get in to the routers management pages and that is where you assign the password for your wifi access.
