I use the Arris T25 modem, but you could use any other router, but make sure it can use BRIDGE MODE. If if in ROUTED MODE it would double NAT, Avoid double NAT.

We live on an acre and even deep in our backyard we get a very strong Mbps reading. Too answer your question the WiFi mesh team all have to be the same brand so they can interact with each other. The modem which feeds the “parent” node can be a different Brand. The parent node then sends the WiFi to all the other “children” nodes in your home...
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You would use one MX unit as your router off your modem and then setup the second for the mesh. To my knowledge you can't use these as extenders off a separate router. One is set as the parent (directly plugged into your modem) and then the rest are child nodes. Now I have been able to use non- Linksys extenders to connect to the mesh but you lose the mesh capability (one child node goes down and the other - child or parent picks up). Hope this helps.
