“Is the modem included? I'm a newb on purchasing these things -- it seemed in the specs like this had an in-built modem as well. Is that the case? Would this work as a single device to connect with my internet service?”

No, this is only a router and not a modem. You will need to purchase a separate modem or rent one from your ISP (internet provider).
