It does get hard wired to your modem. The first one does. After that you just tell it where you are setting up the other ones and they talk to each other. It will tell you if one is not within range but in your garage should be fine.

Only 1 needs to be wired to modem. Don't know exact distance from each other but while setting up it'll notify you when you're out of range or in range for the connection to the first router. Yes you can add on multiple velops. Each router covers about 2000 sqft

- A single VELOP mesh node has to have a physical Ethernet cable connection to one of the (non-WAN) Ethernet ports on the cable modem or modem/router device
- Yes; the VELOP system is meant to be expandable
- You should have no issues with putting in a secondary node in your detached garage
