You don't have to pay the $3 monthly charge for texting - I opted out of that. But if you send &/or receive texts, you will be charged $0.10 for each one. I'm okay with that since I only get texts very rarely. Prepaid just means your monthly phone bill is paid through a credit card or your bank account. You don't pay a bill yourself but you will get a monthly invoice notice. It's charged to a credit card or withdrawn from your bank account. One thing I found out about after I bought my phone is I'm charged taxes each month for state and local which adds about $7.00 extra to my phone bill. :(
