Yes the camera has to be removed to get the battery off. Life if 3 days to 3 weeks for me depending on location

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Complete answer: First, make sure the battery is completely charged - I may not have had a fully-charge battery on my first camera. It ran out in about a month. I got a spare battery, which was a good thing. It is easily replaced and you do have to remove it from the mounting, but that's just a slip-in peg. I had it up and running within a couple of minutes when I put the newly-recharged battery in. One cautionary note: make sure you have a wifi connection that works for ALL cameras! You can't put them on different wireless networks, apparently. Once I discovered that, I actually had to buy a range extender to make things work, but now they do, very well!
