“Why does this have two USB plugs? Do I need to use both of them for the keyboard to work?”

It has two usb connections becuase the keyboard itself has a usb connector builtin. So, while you take up two ports when you plug it in, youo "get one back". As far as I know, if you don't use the port on the keyboard, you son't need to plug both cables in.

One of them is for the back light on the keyboard. If you don't need the keys backlit, don't use that usb plug.

This keyboard has 2 usb connections. One is for the keyboard to pc. The second provides a usb connection on the keyboard itself if you want to plug in another device via usb.

one is for the keyboard and other is for the USB socket on back of the board

Yes, no. Keyboard will work with data end plugged in, but LEDs will not work and USB passthrough will not work.
