You may or may not need the shifter. It depends on the specific game he is playing. I use the wheel without a shifter I usually shift with the paddle shifters on the wheel. I mostly play open wheel racing formula 1 and Indy car. I can shift into reverse by using the downshift paddle (the left paddle) You just shift down from neutral. In F1 racing you do not use reverse that much. You also do not use the clutch many times. I hope this answer helps.
