It is only a way to control basic functions of your activities without have to use the app. You do have to set everything up I. The app first and then you can adjust functions of certain buttons for devices individual controls or activities. When you choose button configuration or configure remote on the app usually each button you choose will tell you what function is already assigned. Example the ff arrows can be skip ahead for a short press and ff until you hit play on a long press on you dvr or blue ray.
