It will result in using the IR beam from the remote to control devices. The hub allows you use radio frequencies to control compatible devices, eliminating the need for IR. If you ever give your dad a gift which involves smart home technology then the harmony hub might become an upgrade opportunity. Otherwise, I am very happy with just the remote, I myself purchased only the remote and I do plan to buy the hub in the future to control appliances with Google Home Mini.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Just purchased my Logitech Harmony One and I love it. It connects my receiver with my TV, Blu-ray player and a couple of other media players. It can be programmed to access any of the above for viewing with a tap on the touchscreen. It does not need the hub if your components have a direct line of site with the remote signal. The hub is required if your components are housed in a covered cabinet and do not have a direct line of site.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No it does not require the hub if all devices are within line of sight. If they’re tucked behind or inside a cabinet then yes a hub is required.
