It is USB plug and play. Does not require a compatible mouse. I bought two of these, and although they were easy to use neither lasted much over a year before the lights went out and they died. I would not recommend this Logitech solely because they don't last.

The Mouse would have to be purchased separately. It would have its own USB receiver that would need to plug into the computer/laptop you intend to use it with. If you are intend on using the mouse with a computer/laptop that supports Bluetooth you could purchase a mouse that could pair via Bluetooth so that it is not using up an additional USB Port. A good option to look at is the Logitech M720. This mouse is both USB and Bluetooth ready so you can pick which way you want to connect the mouse.
