They're programmable to do any of about 25 tasks. Mine are set to back and forward when browsing. You might want them for volume up and down. Lots of possibilities.

I'm sure you can program it for many other uses, but it works great for going forward/backward while browsing.

So the side buttons are for navigation from the current page on a browser tab to pages you visited before or after that page.
