R and Rstudio work fine for me on the MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM for data analysis. Some Monte Carlo simulations take a while to run, but if I'm in a hurry, I will borrow a computer lab and give a bunch of computers a slice of the program to run. I don't use SPSS.

However, either way, you will be promised well performance. I can edit two rows of 4K footage in Final Cut Pro, without dropping much performance. As in, I can have a YouTube video running in the background just fine. Or, the fact that it doesn't take up much memory to edit the entire time. If you are exporting a lot of files that are large, or dealing with 3D modeling, (I am not that well educated on R Studio or such) you should probably upgrade. If you want to save a buck, 8GB of ram should be just fine.
