NO, you don't need a monthly plan for this to work. They don't sell monthly plans. You get a free *year* when you buy/install a Magic Jack and you can then buy in 1 year or 3 year chunks of time!!! You get a US-based number and if you plug the phone in, anywhere in the world with WIFI - with a US number your calls are "free" when you call US phone numbers. ANYONE you know in the USA, can call your number the same way they would if you were answering a phone in the USA. If you are in another country that would be a LONG DISTANCE CALL FROM THE USA - even if you are physically in the same room or next door - you will pay LONG DISTANCE FEES to call around other countries you are physically in with a US-BASED MAGIC JACK PHONE NUMBER. I currently manage 4 distinct Magic Jack phone lines: I use two - ONE is a personal number, and the second is one I use for "work at home" so I don't answer the phone after working hours end to maintain my own "WORK/LIFE" balance via the phone. I manage my mother's line I manage another elder relative's line. One of my lines will need renewal in February this year... One of my lines will need renewal in 2026 For both of my family members I need to renew the subscription lines in 2027. You're good. To connect a MagicJack, you need one of these: --A regular phone cord with jacks at both ends. After that, you can buy 1 year or 3 years at a time (current offer now in 2025). When I first started using Magic Jack they sold chunks of service in one year or in 5 year blocks of time. To my knowledge you can buy MORE than 3 years at a time if you want. I love the fact that there is no monthly bill.**
