After the 12 months, you will need to pay a yearly fee to continue. Still a reasonable cost considering the other big providers! Please be aware that even though the first 12 months are free, there may be a few “hidden” costs. There are charges if you want to port over an existing number phone number; if you want to pick your number vs. letting their system assign you one; and 911 service. Yeah, I know their box lists 911 as free but it may not be in your area. Their website explains it all. Hope this helps. Oh, and yes, my landline phone has an answering machine and it works with magicJack.

Please try again later.It does work with an answering machine, but I initially had trouble with it going to the MagicJack voice mail before the answering machine would pick it up. That was because my answering machine is set to pick up after 4 rings (then 2 rings if there is a message waiting) and the MagicJack was set to pick up after 25 seconds (apparently the default setting) which is a wee bit shorter than the length of time for 4 rings on my analog phone. So I went into the settings for my MagicJack account and increased the "delay" to 45 seconds. After that, there was no problem with the answering machine picking up the call. Now, if for some reason the answering machine is not working, like during a power outage, after 45 seconds the call will get picked up by the MagicJack voice mail function as a back-up. But I guess many callers aren't going to let it ring that many times (maybe 7-8 rings)!

We purchase 5 years at a time because it is the lowest yearly cost. I doubt you can connect it to an answering machine. But there is no need for one. If you miss a call, when the caller leaves a message, Magic Jack records it and sends it to your email as an attachment. Nice!
