Hello Bruceharly. The M-CR612 will support use of both passive and powered/active loudspeakers. The audio output on the back panel can be set to either 'line out' or 'variable' (pre-out). The best speakers to choose would be those which are the right size for the room, and with the type of sound your ears like to hear. The latter of course would need to be done based on comparing speakers in store. If you have a smaller room, smaller speakers are a good choice. Larger speakers sound better in larger rooms. With larger passive speakers however, it is a good idea to make sure they are efficient/sensitive, unless you wish to add a power amplifier to the set-up. A Best Buy/Magnolia Home Audio Specialist will be able to make necessary recommendations either way.
