I think it will work without the app, but I don't recommend it. It will probably need firmware updates when you get it and they could fix or improve all kinds of things from Bluetooth, DTS, and Dolby support to how it works with your TV over eARC - who knows! Besides that, if you don't use the app you'll miss out on some advanced features like automatically calibrating the sound for your room with the built-in mics on the Heston 60 or the adjustable crossover on the Heston Sub 200.
